Archive of Links to Minivan Safety Information:
If Safety for you and your kids is a top priority, modern minivans are one of the safest classes of vehicles. When equipped with side curtain airbags and stability control, the 2004 Ford Freestar, 2004 Mercury Monterey, 2004 Toyota Sienna and 2004 Nissan Quest are among the safest vehicles on the road. The 1999-2004 Honda Odyssey and 1998-2003 Toyota Sienna are also very safe options, though they lack side curtain airbags. The Kia Sedona, 1999-2003 Ford Windstar, 2001-2004 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2001-2004 Chrysler Town&Country and the 2001-2 Mazda MPV are also safe choices, though they were only rated only "Acceptable" in the IIHS offset crash test and some may have a slightly higher rollover risk.
Don't assume an SUV is the safest choice. Larger models often have
poor handling/braking. Despite what you may think, many models don't
get top crash test results. They also roll more easily in
crashes. Because their body-on-frame designs often have stiffer or
less effective crush zones, occupants of truck-based SUVs are more likely
to suffer injuries when they crash with other big SUVs or stationary
objects. According to Public Citizen, they are particularly
hazardous to children. Finally, they're also VERY unsafe to light-weight,
low-riding passenger cars.
